MAUCO is a project led by the Advanced Center for Chronic Diseases – ACCDIS
On December 1st at the Municipal Theater of Molina, the 4th public account of the MAUCO population study was held. The activity was led by its principal investigator and deputy director of the Advanced Center for Chronic Diseases – ACCDIS Dr. Catterina Ferriccio.
After three years without being able to carry out the activity in face-to-face format, this year 2022 the community returned to value the presence and thanked the team for delivering the advances of the study.
Dr. Catterina Ferreccio, principal investigator of the MAUCO population study and deputy director of ACCDIS, thanked the local institutions that collaborate with the project, the participants and the rest of the community of Molina. “During these 9 years, the project has studied which are the risk factors for suffering from any of the chronic diseases, for example: social, environmental factors, lifestyles, infections, genetics, health system. On the other hand, we also evaluated the damage that may already exist in patients, such as heart disease and circulation system, dental health, gallbladder and liver diseases, mental health and cognitive impairment, respiratory diseases, metabolic diseases, kidney, cancer, among others.
With this breakthrough, we realized that all diseases have factors in common, for example, chronic inflammation, metabolic alterations, loss of muscle mass, increased fat in the liver and cognitive impairment. For this reason, last year we started a pilot project, called MAUCO+, where we seek to prevent damage or reduce the damage caused by fatty liver disease and cardiovascular disease through dietary changes and physical activity,” said Dr. Catterina.
The project has not only focused on studying the participants, but has also contributed to the improvement of the new generations. To date, 32 master’s degree students, 12 doctoral students and 8 postdoctoral students have been trained.
The activity was attended by Dr. María Gloria Icaza, seremi of health of Maule, Dr. Catterina Ferreccio, principal investigator of the MAUCO+ population study and ACCDIS deputy director, Dr. Andrea Huidoro, principal investigator of MAUCO+, Dr. Sandra Cortés, ACCDIS researcher, Dr. Soraya León, Professor of the University of Talca, doctoral and postdoctoral students of the project and the community.
