The objective is to evaluate whether this change in the way of eating would have effects on weight, body fat, blood sugar and cholesterol levels and blood pressure, among other aspects. Mariana Cifuentes, an academic at the Institute of Nutrition and Food Technology (INTA) of the University of Chile and principal investigator of ACCDiS, is in charge of the research, which is supported by the Center for Research on Food Environments and Prevention of Chronic Diseases Associated with Nutrition (CIAPEC-INTA).
The objective of the study is to evaluate whether this change in the way of eating would have effects on weight, body fat, blood sugar and cholesterol levels and blood pressure, among other aspects.
The research seeks to determine the possible benefits of intermittent fasting for 16 hours on people’s health. In this sense, it will evaluate the effects of eating in a window of 8 hours (for example: between 10:00 and 18:00 hours). During that time, participants eat their meals normally, without any restrictions or calorie counting, while during the fasting period they can only drink water or sugar-free liquids.
In short, “it is only a change of habit in the times when food can be eaten and does not entail any restriction in what people eat,” says Mariana Cifuentes, an academic at the Institute of Nutrition and Food Technology (INTA) of the University of Chile, who is in charge of the research.
The objective is to evaluate whether this change in the way of eating would have effects on weight, body fat, blood sugar and cholesterol levels and blood pressure, among other aspects. The background of the research indicates that “eating more orderly and limiting meals to smaller windows, allowing the body to fast for more hours, has benefits for health, weight and body fat,” says the INTA academic.
The study currently has 13 participants -belonging to the CIAPEC-INTA cohorts- and seeks to follow up 50 men with obesity indices, between 18 and 21 years of age, living in the southeast sector of the Metropolitan Region. “The latter has to do with the fact that we want the participants to be as similar as possible so that the results obtained are as little influenced by the very different characteristics of the participants,” explains Cifuentes.
Intermittent Fasting Study Call for Papers
We invite you to participate in a study on the possible benefits of intermittent fasting. This research aims to evaluate if this practice can help to lose weight and/or improve the metabolic profile of its participants (glycemia, insulin, lipid profile). Participants will have to make a change in their eating habits by fasting for 16 hours and then eating their food without dietary restrictions in an 8-hour window. The study lasts 16 weeks.
Requirements for participation:
- Males between 18 and 21 years of age.
- Nutritional status: overweight (BMI≥30).
- People living in communes in the southeastern sector of the Metropolitan Region: Puente Alto, Florida, Macul, Peñalolén, San Ramón, La Granja and La Pintana.
If you meet the above requirements or know someone who is interested in participating, please register at the following link, where the team in charge of the study will inform you of further details: Fasting Study Registration.
