Great interest was generated among teachers and students in the realization of the "1st Colloquium for the International Day of Chemistry". The activity was planned by Prof. Juan Pablo Cid and the professors of our Faculty participated, Sergio Lavandero and Inmaculada Cerrato. The conference dedicated to Chemistry seeks to promote the creation of an international event that recognizes the relevance of this discipline.
The Faculty of Chemical and Pharmaceutical Sciences received a special invitation to participate in the "1st Colloquium for International Chemistry Day", which was held last Thursday, August 31 in the main hall of the Liceo de Aplicacion, in the commune of Santiago.
The activity was carried out by Prof. Juan Pablo Cid Ugalde, who has a degree in chemistry and biology education from the USACH and a master's degree in university education from the Bernardo O'Higgins University, who also works as a chemistry teacher at the Liceo de Aplicacion. The purpose of the meeting is to promote the International Day of Chemistry, promoted by the Chilean College of Chemists of Chile led by Dr. Estela Pérez, UNESCO and the UN.
The proposed date for the commemoration of this milestone is December 16, On December 16, 1771, Antoine Laurent de Lavoisier and Marie Anne Pierrette Paulze were united in marriage, known as Marie Lavoisier, Key figures in the initiation and development of chemistry.
The 1st Colloquium for International Chemistry Day ended with the signing of the declaration by the authorities, Researchers and academics present, who are committed to promoting the creation of this event.
The declaration will be submitted to IUPAC (International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry), the United Nations and UNESCO through the relevant ministerial authorities of Chile.
Participation of academics
The opening speech was given by Prof. Sergio Lavandero González, National Prize of Natural Sciences 2022, Director and Principal Investigator at ACCDiS (Advanced Center for chronic diseases) and university senator of our university.
Professor Lavandero spoke on a variety of topics, such as the origin of the universe and the 10 most important scientific discoveries, These include the sequencing of the human genome, Gravitational waves, "We are stardust", Emphasized.
Another key point was when he recounted the origin of his interest in chemistry. "I wanted to dedicate myself to the research part. When I discovered chemistry, a whole new world opened up for me.", added.
"The most wonderful thing has been the appearance of the human being. We are made up of 200 different cell types, including the nervous system, bony, muscular, cardiovascular, etc.", Mused.
In the final part, he made an invitation to the students of the Lyceum of Application. "We need to train new scientists. They are going to have the responsibility and I invite them to be part of this commitment.", Called.
On behalf of our dean, Prof. Pablo Richter Duk was assisted by Prof. Inmaculada Cerrato Ruiz, Degree in Chemistry from the University of Cordoba, Spain, and PhD in Chemistry, Analytical and Environmental Chemistry from the University of Chile.
His speech began with a question open to the audience: What is Chemistry?? The answers were not long in coming. Energy, The State of Matter, science, The study of reactions, among others.
The Prof. Cerrato, who is also an academic in the Department of Inorganic and Analytical Chemistry, and Deputy Director of the Unit for Liaison and Integration with the Environment (UVIM), He listed the different areas of chemistry and applications in transdisciplinary fields, Like medicine, environment, Agricultural Engineering, materials, food industry and more.
The academic also had time to present the offer of undergraduate careers of our Faculty: Chemistry, Chemistry and Pharmacy, Food Engineering, and biochemistry.
At last, Prof. Cerrato invited students and professors to participate in the Plan Colegios program so that they can have an approach to our Faculty and scientific work.
"Chile needs creative ideas, Thinking Minds, that can be the generational change in the field of teaching and research", closed the academic.
Also present at the event were the president of the Chilean College of Chemists A.G, Estela Perez; Prof. Domingo Ruiz León, of the School of Chemistry of the University of Santiago; Prof. Edith Pinto Carrasco, director of the Chemistry and Pharmacy program at the Bernardo O'Higgins University; Prof. Ángel Olguín González, who attended on behalf of the Dean of the Faculty of Chemistry and Biology of the University of Santiago, Prof. Leonora Mendoza Espínola.
