Illustrated story “PichinCO in search of water” reached more than 4700 children and more than 100 teachers in the North RM

In an effort to contribute to the awareness and care of water in the regional territory, the Explora North Metropolitan Region Associative Project, of the Ministry of Science, Technology, Knowledge and innovation, led by the Advanced Center for Chronic Diseases (ACCDIS), through the University of Chile, developed an educational product aimed at children aged 5 to 8 called "PinchinCO in search of water". In its first year of implementation, The product was delivered free of charge to 4753 children and 117 teachers, representing 57 educational establishments from various areas of the North RM.
"PichinCO in search of water” is an illustrated story designed for children in transitional levels of Early Childhood Education, First and second grade, which promotes an early approach and appropriation of the environmental problems associated with the water crisis affecting the country and mainly some communes in the northern sector of the capital. On the other hand, and with the aim of responding to the competency-based model Explora to the curricular guidelines of the educational levels indicated, the story is complemented by a teaching guide that contains conceptual and methodological information associated with the content proposed in the narration.
After almost two months of implementation, the closing day of this product was held in November 2023 at the Faculty of Sciences, Chemistries and Pharmaceuticals of the University of Chile. The event brought together educators from the transitional levels of Early Childhood Education and teachers from the first and second grades.
During the day, a workshop was held by the Ideo Maker team, in which the concept of design thinking methodology was worked on. And through, of a group dynamic, Participants used the ideation stages, Prototyping and testing with the help of everyday materials such as paper, cardboard, popsicle sticks and others and in this way solve the maker challenge.
The workshop ended with a period of reflection on the experience lived in the classroom from the implementation of the story "PichinCO in search of water”, where the strengths and weaknesses detected were analysed, being a key point when it comes to identifying opportunities for improvement around the product.
On the other hand, Two co-designs of the learning experiences proposed in the story were presented and socialized in order to learn about the adaptations that each one made to achieve the successful implementation of PichinCO. In this sense, Montserrat Arias, teacher of basic education at the Félix Bulnes Hospital School of the Carolina Labra Riquelme Foundation, "PichinCO brought us several enriching experiences, What stands out the most is that the children of the hospital identified with the characters and helped them to travel through all the territories that the story proposed, On the other hand, it was also interesting to realize that they recognized every place in the territory of the MR and looked for solutions to each problem."
In this same line, Professor Montserrat explained that due to the multi-level work with which the hospital works, PichinCO was implemented with adolescents, who also identified with the problem of the water crisis and sought solutions.
To finish, Sara Ñancupil, teacher of the G-349 Capilla de Caleu de Tiltil Basic School commented “I am very happy and grateful with Explora, This experience allowed me to work in a playful and interesting way on an important topic, such as the lack of this water resource in the Metropolitan Region".
The story and teaching guide "PichinCO in search of water" reflects a significant step for the Explora RM Norte Project, regarding the awareness and participation of future generations in the face of the urgent environmental problems facing the regional territory, generating greater awareness from an early age and thus promoting, A more sustainable future.
