Faculty pays tribute to Prof. Sergio Lavandero for winning the 2022 National Prize in Natural Sciences

On the occasion of the tribute, the «Sergio Lavandero González» Award was created for the best student of the Faculty’s doctoral programs.
Authorities, academics, students and collaboration staff gathered on Tuesday, July 11 in the Aula Magna of the Faculty of Chemical and Pharmaceutical Sciences of the University of Chile to pay tribute to Sergio Lavandero González, full professor of the academic unit, University Senator, director ACCDiS and National Prize of Natural Sciences 2022.
Sergio Lavandero’s professional career has been inextricably linked to the academic unit. First as a student in the career of Chemistry and Pharmacy. Later in his specialization in the Biochemistry doctorate. And to this day it is the place where she has cultivated her passion for higher education and scientific research.
The ceremony in his honor was attended by important university authorities. Among them the rector, Prof. Rosa Devés Alessandri; the prorector, Prof. Alejandra Mizala Salces; the dean, Prof. Pablo Richter Duk, and the vice dean, Prof. Soledad Bollo Dragnic.
Also in attendance were the Vice Rector for Academic Affairs, Prof. Claudio Pastenes Villarreal, and the Vice Rector for Research and Development, Prof. Enrique Aliste Almuna; the Dean of the School of Dentistry, Prof. Irene Morales Bozo; and the Director of the Clinical Hospital of the University of Chile, Dr. Eduardo Tobar Almonacid. Also, the university senators Prof. Soledad Berríos del Solar and Prof. Consuelo Fresno Rivas.
The string quartet of the Colectivo Azul of the Faculty of Arts delighted the audience with the interpretation of the song «Andante for strings» by the composer Alfonso Leng. The group is composed of musicians José Manuel Hernández, Roberto Canales, Carol Basoalto and Tatiana Mejías.
Dean Prof. Pablo Richter Duk highlighted the valuable contribution and vast trajectory of Professor Lavandero. «Today we recognize in his space, in his home, in his environment, Professor Sergio Lavandero González for having obtained the National Prize of Natural Sciences last year. That means a lot to us, as a faculty it fills us with pride,» he emphasizes.
«Sergio’s academic life has been marked by the formation of advanced human capital, being one of the academics who has founded more disciples in the history of this faculty», he added.
The Directorate of Extension and Communications prepared an emotional video with greetings and testimonials from friends, loved ones and relatives of Professor Sergio Lavandero. One of the special guests at the ceremony was Ximena Barrientos Rosenberg, a distinguished graduate of the Faculty and wife of Prof. Sergio Lavandero.
Prof. Mario Chiong Lay, who has worked side by side with the academic laureate, was in charge of the semblance, marked by anecdotes and the human side of the professional.
«All these years do mark and even more so if one has enjoyed the whole journey. Sergio today we celebrate you, but we also vindicate what you left sown in your family, friends, students, colleagues and in the spaces where you worked. Your legacy will last forever, as you are one of those people who make history. Congratulations for this recognition, you deserve it», he expressed with emotion.
At the closing of the ceremony, the hymn of the University of Chile was played. The professor of the Faculty of Arts, Leonora Letelier was at the piano, accompanied by the students: Nataly García, soprano; Laura Narváez, mezzo-soprano; Ramón Espinoza, tenor, and Miguel Kehler, baritone.
Sergio Lavandero González Award
The Faculty of Chemical and Pharmaceutical Sciences announced the creation of the Sergio Lavandero González Award to honor our National Award 2022. The best student of the five doctoral programs of our faculty will be worthy of this recognition.
The winner will receive a diploma and funding to participate in an international scientific congress relevant to his or her specialty. The student will be chosen by a jury made up of the dean, vice dean, the academic director, the director of the graduate school and Professor Lavandero.
During the ceremony, the dean and vice dean signed the administrative act approving the award, which contains the regulations of the award.
«Any instance that serves to encourage the work of new researchers is valuable. I think it is interesting that the award is oriented to allow them to attend a congress, since participation in this type of instance pushes them and gives them the opportunity to have connections with other researchers at an international level,» said the prorector, Prof. Alejandra Mizala Salces.
«I was surprised by the creation of this award that bears my name. The most important thing is that it serves so that other young people can develop. Going abroad opens doors and worlds,» reflects Professor Sergio Lavandero.
