For the second consecutive period, the Advanced Center for Chronic Diseases (ACCDiS), together with the Faculty of Chemical and Pharmaceutical Sciences of the University of Chile, were awarded the Regional Associative Project for the Northern Metropolitan Region of the Ministry of Science, Technology, Knowledge and Innovation. Explora is a national instance that promotes the socialization of scientific knowledge through the strengthening of CTCI competencies in educational communities.
For two years, the Explora Northern Metropolitan Region Project will continue to generate, stimulate and contribute to the development of a scientific-technological culture in the school community. Through a network of multidisciplinary collaborators belonging to public and private organizations, the project will work with the school communities of Cerro Navia, Colina, Conchalí, Curacavi, Huechuraba, Independencia, Lampa, Las Condes, Lo Barnechea, Lo Prado, María Pinto, Padre Hurtado, Providencia, Pudahuel, Quilicura, Quinta Normal, Recoleta, Renca, Tiltil and Vitacura.
Among the initiatives to be developed by the project are:
- Inquiry Program for Early Ages (PIPE): Initiative for teaching science at the middle and transition levels of kindergarten education. During this year, we will work on Natural Sciences, executing the module «Animal shelter, animal care» for middle levels and «We are little penguins» for transition levels.
- PichinCO «In Search of Water»: Through a book of activities, scientific skills will be developed to identify the causes and consequences of environmental problems related to water scarcity affecting the country.
- School Research and Innovation (IIE): This initiative seeks to foster the development of research and innovation skills in the educational community through the Mini Explorers and School Science Clubs initiative.
- Camp Explora VA!: This initiative will seek to strengthen the competencies of kindergarten educators and practicing teachers to support ICT education and promote the formation of learning communities and collaboration networks among teachers.
- CuriosasMentes Activities: Through interactive meetings with the scientific community and educational communities, we hope to develop meeting spaces and awaken curiosity, interest and appreciation for scientific topics in the school community.
«The proposed initiatives were the result of the good practices and execution that we implemented during four years in the 17 municipalities of the Northern Metropolitan Region with which we worked. However, in this application we considered new elements that made us reformulate the objectives, such as: socio-cultural diversity, territorial diversity, socioeconomic gaps and education, environmental issues, school health and welfare and development of the CTCI culture» explained the director of the Explora RM North Project, Mario Chiong, also an academic at the University of Chile and ACCDiS researcher.
In this same sense, the director of the ACCDiS Center, also National Prize in Natural Sciences 2023 and institutional advisor of the project, Sergio Lavandero, highlighted the importance of the awarding of this type of competition for the Center «Through the project we can continue contributing to the early prevention of chronic non-communicable diseases from preschool and school levels. Obesity rates and risk behaviors in the country are worrisome, so it is important to create social awareness about healthy behaviors in school communities.»
The Explora Northern Metropolitan Region Explora Project team will be made up of its General Director Dr. Mario Chiong; Institutional Advisor Dr. Sergio Lavandero, National Prize in Natural Sciences 2022; Executive Coordinator Dr. Mónica Villa; Pedagogical and Early Ages Coordinator Camila Suárez; Head of CTCI Networks and CuriosasMentes initiative Paula Meriño Iglesias; Head of Research and Innovation at Emma’s School Mónica Villa; Pedagogical and Early Ages Coordinator Camila Suárez; Responsible for CTCI Networks and CuriosasMentes initiative Paula Meriño Iglesias; Responsible for School Research and Innovation Emma Figari; Responsible for quantifications and evaluations Bernarda Ihnen; Designer and illustrator Bryan Arredondo; Responsible for communications Maria Jose Olivares, Community Manager Adriana Mujica and Responsible for Finance Andrea Barra, in addition to the scientific advisors and education area.
