This and other concerns are part of the reflections of the teachers and early childhood educators of Curacaví. The initiatives of the Explora Northern Metropolitan Region Associative Project seek to contribute to the transformation of education, from pre-basic to secondary education, to strengthen technological, scientific and innovation competencies and to provide new and innovative pedagogical practices.
Last Thursday, June 15, 46 kindergarten educators and 22 teachers from different areas of knowledge from the commune of Curacaví, participated in the introductory workshop on «School Scientific Research and Innovation and the Early Age Inquiry Program (PIPE)», led by the Explora Northern Metropolitan Region Associative Project of the Ministry of Science, Technology, Knowledge and Innovation. The workshop was held at the Cuyuncaví School.
As of this year, Curacaví is part of the 20 communes with which the Explora RM North Project will work, this being a great opportunity to strengthen technological, scientific and innovation skills in children and adolescents from the most remote communes of the center. «Our approach, during the next two years of execution, is collaborative and research-based. With our activities we seek to contribute to the development of new innovative and transformative pedagogical practices, creating the possibility of finding educational solutions to common problems around us,» explained Dr. Mario Chiong, project director.
The activity was also attended by authorities from the Municipal Education Administration Department (DAEM) of Curacaví, who took the opportunity to thank the Explora team for this approach «This is a great opportunity that we give to our teachers so that they have more and better tools to work with their students. Today our focus is the formation of integral students, we want to educate future citizens who contribute sustainably to the country and also train the teachers of our commune on the importance of research from an early age» said Álvaro Castañeda, communal technical head of the DAEM of Curacaví.
During the activity, the participants received all the information about the following initiatives:
Early Years Inquiry Program (PIPE).
This is a science teaching initiative aimed at children in the middle and transition levels of kindergarten education. Through the active role of girls and boys and the execution of semi-structured and playful learning experiences, it seeks to develop the necessary competencies so that they can understand and know the world around them.
Kindergarten educators, kindergarten education technicians, special educators or psychopedagogues, belonging to educational establishments of the 20 communes with which Explora RM Norte works, can participate. Applications will be open until July 13.
«Since I was a student I have known the Explora program and, to tell the truth, one of the things I appreciated the most is the delivery of materials for the execution of the activities. One of my focuses is to work on research and these tools are very useful at the time of execution, since they help children learn to explore their environment with the appropriate materials, beyond just imagining. With PIPE, I hope to continue promoting research in the youngest children and to improve the execution of the projects. In my case, one of the great challenges is to learn to respect the parameters of the committed dates», commented Paloma Ferrada Norambuena, kindergarten educator at the Cuyuncaví School.
School Scientific Research and Innovation (IIE)
This is an initiative that seeks to support teams of teachers and students through training, accompaniment and the assignment of scientific advisors that allow them to learn to ask questions, experiment, draw conclusions and seek explanations to understand the natural, social and/or technological world based on their experiences.
The activity is divided into two groups, «Club Científicos Escolares» (School Science Club) for students from 5th grade to 4th grade and «Mini Explorador@es» for students from 1st to 4th grade. Applications will be open until July 13 and July 20, respectively.
Teacher Miriam Espinoza, one of the participants in the IIE workshop, commented: «This type of call made me reflect on what I am contributing to my children? I want them to be people who can develop in the future, respecting and rescuing all the elements that surround them and where they develop on a daily basis. I appreciate the opportunity to see how school research and innovation should be a cultural practice in the educational community», said Miriam Espinoza, elementary school teacher at the San José Obrero School in Curacaví.
This visit is part of the project’s tour of new communities. Soon they will continue to expand the appropriation of science in the educational community of the 20 communes of the project and thus contribute to the strengthening of technological, scientific and innovation skills in the Northern Metropolitan Region.
