During the last week of July, the Explora Northern Metropolitan Region Associative Project began its first training sessions with teachers, educators and technicians in Kindergarten Education who will participate this year in the initiatives «School Research and Innovation (IIE)» and the «Inquiry Program for Early Ages (PIPE)».
More than 80 teachers from various municipalities in the Northern Metropolitan Region participated in the meetings and for the first time, compared to previous years, representatives from Curacaví, María Pinto, Padre Hurtado, Cerro Navia, Lo Prado and Quinta Normal attended. «We are very happy to add more teachers to our initiatives. During these two years we will work hard to transform education in our areas by strengthening scientific and innovation skills,» explained Loreto Bornscheuer, executive coordinator of Explora RM Norte.
The teachers of the School Science Clubs began with a workshop on bioethics and safety in research, led by rapporteurs belonging to the Vice-Rectory of Research, Ethics and Safety in Research Unit of the Pontificia Universidad Católica (PUC), called Yo me cuido y te cuido investigando (I take care of myself and I take care of you by researching). «The objective was to deliver knowledge to professors about the main guidelines they should know and apply to develop research projects with students, respecting those who participate in the research and for whom scientific knowledge is generated. In general, these ethical guidelines are applied in university environments, but they should start to be developed from the first school research» said Amanda Nogueira, Coordinator of the Committee of Social Sciences, Arts and Humanities of the PUC.
On the other hand, during the last week of July, the National Center for Conservation and Restoration (CNCR) opened its spaces for an informative session for teachers who will be part of the «Mini Explorers» 2023. During the meeting, the teachers met their scientific advisors, who are specialists in the field of cultural heritage and museums, and held a workshop on heritage and collaborative mapping.
«With the aim of addressing this year’s theme, «Heritage and Multiculturality», during the session we conducted a participatory mapping through open dialogue, appreciation and appropriation of cultural heritage, from reflection on the personal, group, territorial and educational environment. The activity was structured in three parts: a brief presentation of the main concepts related to heritage as a general idea and the different perspectives that exist in this regard; the development of the participatory map from the exploration of personal and shared experiences; and the closing with the presentation of the result of the map and a reflection on heritage» reported Barbara Reyes, CNCR support professional.
On the other hand, the educators and technicians in Kindergarten Education who will be part of the Early Years Inquiry Program (PIPE) were introduced to the world of scientific competencies and their importance in the early ages. The activity started with a basic explanation of «What is science?» and then addressed the scientific method and how it is related to the development of scientific competencies, which are very important for the intellectual growth of children. Finally, a dynamic was carried out with the participants where they themselves, through their previous knowledge, defined the scientific competencies identified in the learning modules», explained Dr. Mónica Villa, workshop leader and Academic of the Department of Transversal Training in Health of the Universidad Central de Chile.
This year, 56 kindergarten educators and technicians will participate in PIPE in the area of Natural Sciences through two Learning Modules: «Animal shelter and animal care» for middle levels, and «We are Little Penguins» for transition levels.
What teachers say
«This is my first experience in PIPE and I really liked this meeting, I am very motivated! All the material provided is very useful and productive, it feeds back the learning as an educator and re-enchants you with your profession» commented Beatriz Canelo Cortés, early childhood educator of the Liceo Bicentenario Simón Bolívar, Municipal School of Las Condes.
Claudio Miranda Pinto, science teacher at the Liceo Industrial de Recoleta of the Romanos XII Solidarity Foundation, is one of the participants of the School Science Clubs who took advantage of the opportunity to express his joy: «As a school we are very happy to have been selected, it is our first experience with the Project and we have great expectations. We know that there is a lot to work with the students and learn with them, since learning never ends».
Javiera Catrón, a teacher from the Pumahue School in Huechuraba, also an IIE participant, took advantage of the opportunity to thank other teachers from the Metropolitan Region who have the same objective of teaching science in their classrooms for the networking opportunity. «Knowing the experience of other teachers motivates you to continue fostering the development of science in your students and hopefully one of them will love science as much as we do,» she concluded.
The Regional Associative Project, Explora Northern Metropolitan Region, is executed by the Advanced Center for Chronic Diseases (ACCDiS) and led by the Faculty of Chemical and Pharmaceutical Sciences of the University of Chile. Its objective is to strengthen the competencies in CTCI of the educational communities, through the planning, implementation and socialization of educational activities, considering the principles of inclusion, cultural diversity and gender equity, decentralization, effective communication and sustainability.
