It has been a few days since Fernando Lanas, cardiologist and academic at the Universidad de la Frontera (UFRO), learned that he had been summoned by the World Health Organization (WHO) to develop strategies to improve the treatment of heart attacks and cardiovascular accidents.
In a letter, the international organization informed him that he will be part of a committee of experts who will develop this new strategy, which will be distributed to Ministries of Health around the world so that they can implement it.
On the other hand, both pathologies are among the main causes of death in our country, which makes his appeal all the more important. In addition, he is the only South American who will participate in this work, according to El Mercurio.
Faced with this situation, Lanas commented that “I feel very good. On the one hand it is a great honor, but beyond that, it is an opportunity to do something useful for humanity”, he told the newspaper.
Along the same lines, he added that “there is already a lot of knowledge about how to prevent myocardial infarction and stroke, but now the objective is to close the gaps to prevent death and disability in those who suffer from them”.
He also explained that these consequences “are early consultation, because people arrive late to the health services, and also the knowledge of the work teams on what to do for quick and timely treatment”.
The cardiologist, who has already had a first meeting with some international experts brought together by the WHO, has achieved many successes in his career. At present, in addition to teaching at the university campus, he is in charge of sub-directions at the Cardiovascular Responsibility Center of the Hernán Henríquez Aravena Hospital (Temuco) and at CIGES.
On the other hand, he became president of the Chilean Society of Cardiology and is a member of the American College of Cardiology (USA) and the European Society of Cardiology. He also obtained a master’s degree in Clinical Epidemiology at the University of Pennsylvania and holds a PhD in Biomedical Research from the Autonomous University of Barcelona.
