In a ceremony held at the Palacio de La Moneda and attended by the Rector Rosa Devés, The president presented the distinctions in the categories of Natural Sciences and Applied and Technological Sciences -obtained by the academics U. from Chile Sergio Lavandero and Ricardo Araya-, also in the mentions of History, Literature and Musical Arts. Alongside that, announced an initiative to annually award the Literature Prize.
In a ceremony held at the Palacio de La Moneda, and headed by President Gabriel Boric, accompanied by the Ministers of Education, Marco Antonio Avila; of Cultures, Juliet Brodsky; and Science, Silvia Diaz, the 2022 National Awards were presented.
On the occasion, the winners in the categories of Natural Sciences were distinguished, Sergio Lavandero; Applied and Technological Sciences, Ricardo Araya; History, Rafael Luis Sagredo; Literature, Hernan Rivera Letelier; and Musical Arts, Elisa Avendaño Curaqueo. From the group, the winners in Natural Sciences and Applied and Technological Sciences correspond to graduates and professors of the Casa de Bello.
President Boric highlighted each of the winners and recognized the contribution they have given to the development of the country. “Each of the disciplines they have exercised has also been a way to allow travel.. Hernán Rivera has achieved it with his works around the world, you (Award-winning scientists) with your students, Elisa with her singing, with the recovery of their culture, and therefore, The work transcends territoriality, The space, and time”, The president said..
He added that “this year we are celebrating eight decades since the first National Prize for Literature was awarded, The oldest of the national awards, and that was delivered at the time to a writer who wished we would read more again., and who is called Augusto D'Halmar”. On the other hand, Rector Devés pointed out that the winners represent “Lives dedicated to science, Humanities and culture, that make the country great”.
History of the National Award
The National Prize is the highest recognition granted by the State of Chile to the work of Chileans who, for your excellence, creativity, Transcendent contribution to the national culture and the development of these fields and areas of knowledge and arts, become creditors of these awards.

Sergio Lavandero González (Natural sciences)
He has a degree in Chemistry and Pharmacy and a PhD in Biochemistry, both degrees obtained by the University of Chile; Refresher stays at academic institutions in the Netherlands, England, Australia and the United States. Professor of the Faculty of Chemical and Pharmaceutical Sciences and the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Chile; Adjunct Professor, University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center (Dallas, USA); Director and Principal Investigator of the Advanced Center for Chronic Diseases (ACCDiS ) formed by the University of Chile and the P. Universidad Católica de Chile. Born in Santiago on September 19, 1959 (62 years). He also applied for the years 2016 and 2020.
Ricardo Araya Baltra (Applied and Technological Sciences)
He is a Psychiatrist from the University of Chile, completed his training in Psychiatry at the Institute of Psychiatry and the Maudsley Hospital in London; PhD from the University of London. Diploma in Health Economics at the University of Aberdeen, England. Academic and researcher in Chilean and foreign universities. He is currently Director of the Centre for Global Mental Health at King's College London, England. Born in Santiago on September 3, 1953, 68 years old.
Rafael Sagredo Baeza (History)
He holds a PhD and Master in History from the Colegio de México. State Professor in History, Geography and Civic Education of the P. Catholic University of Chile. Professor of the Institute of History at the P. Universidad Católica de Chile, where he works as a professor in undergraduate courses since 1990 and in postgraduate courses from 2005 onwards. Born in Santiago on January 3, 1959 (63 years), lives in Santiago. He was also nominated in 2018 and 2020.
Hernan Rivera Letelier (Literature)
He is undoubtedly one of the most widely read contemporary Chilean authors.. Prolific author, describes in his 21 books published to date the pampas of the north of the country, The nostalgia of its landscapes and its inhabitants in the silence of the desert and the saltpeter. This veracity and strength in his stories is sustained in the author's experience., who traveled in his childhood through the offices of the nitrate Algorta, María Elena and Pedro de Valdivia, lived adolescence in Antofagasta and knew Latin America in his youth. Elisa Avendaño Curaqueo (Musical Arts)
She is the first representative of indigenous peoples and the fifth woman to receive the National Prize for Musical Arts 2022. Mapuche woman born in the Manuel Chavarría community of the commune of Lautaro, Araucanía Region, He has had a life trajectory focused on his culture through the practice and teaching of Mapuzungun, Traditional Mapuche medicine and the composition and performance of traditional Mapuche music. She has excelled as a researcher, author and composer of the cultural heritage of the Mapuche people. In addition, She has taken care to transmit this knowledge and knowledge to the new generations of girls, Mapuche children and youth, through workshops and music classes, Dance and other cultural manifestations.
