Following the signing of a cooperation agreement between both institutions, May 16 was the First Workshop of research in Cancer in the dependencies of the Arturo López Pérez Foundation Oncology Institute (FALP).

The event counted with the participation of clinicians, academics and researchers to deepen cooperation networks and strengthen translational scientific work with regard to the processing of human carcinoma in the country.

The event was attended by Marcelo Kogan, principal investigator ACCDiS, who spoke about the use of nanoparticles in medicine against cancer and, In addition, the treatment of the cancer, Hepatobiliary fototermia with gold particles using.

Consulted for his work with nanoparticles, Dr. Kogan said that: "we use them because they tend to be retained in the tumor tissue and this allows the pharmacological action to have an active addressing. In this way, improving the delivery of drugs to patients going through very difficult barriers, as the brain macro. On the other hand, gold nanoparticles have good physical and chemical properties, Since its surface have electrons that absorb energy and dissipate it locally producing heat to destroy tumor cells and detect them ultra-sensitive".

In both, for the head of the unit for research and teaching of FALP, Manuel Najera, "this is an opportunity to increase the scientific production overall by our professionals and therefore is essential experience and the research capacity of the U". of Chile. This 2019 established a joint work plan, where we will develop small sources of funding to scale ideas and also will make publications in areas of epidemiology and population research. All of this will help us that we can present high impact to future projects, installing different lines of study".

The Vice President for research and development of the University of Chile, Flavio Salazar, He spoke about the work that has developed over the past 20 years in immunotherapy. "Cancer is a public health problem and requires a comprehensive look at the country. Immune therapy has already changed the perspective on this chronic disease and already there is a science of the future, but as a robust reality. This method impacts the natural immune response against cancer, as it uses the system of patients to detect and combat their own tumors. In Chile we have much potential for this research and we have managed to customize therapies according to the specific needs of people diagnosed with carcinoma", said.

The Deputy Director of the FALP diagnostic units, Carolina Selman, He concluded that "one of the most interesting spots of this initiative is that basic research may relate to clinicians to advance new discoveries. These possible cancer developments will benefit patients, but it is essential that we maintain this collaboration in the time. One of the great challenges is to make that University scientist and professional Foundation can communicate in the same language. It's not just deliver a piece of sample or exposing a finding, but that these aspects can be applied in the everyday relationship with patients".
