This Thursday, April 15, our researcher ACCDIS Dr. Roberto Bravo will offer a workshop to the 1st-middle students of the San Esteban School in Antofagasta, where you'll talk about what do we know about excess weight?

Workshops will be until Friday, April 16, while activities for the general public will take place this weekend. More than 20 regional scientific institutions, national and international organizations will participate in the Educational Program of this festival presented in conjunction with Escondida | Bhp.

The Antofagasta Port of Ideas Science Festival 2021 started this Monday with its student programming. For five days, activities will be held for school audiences at the event.

Leading scientific institutions in their areas will offer thousands of students thirty activities, where it highlights the participation from the United States of the American Museum of Natural History and the scientific film cycle where some of the most outstanding films of the Pariscience festival in France will be released.

The prestigious museum, one of the most important in the world, take a cosmic tour from Antofagasta to Mars, alongside astrophysicist Jackie Faherty, who will later participate in a conversation and round of questions from schoolchildren. Also from the New York Museum, paleontologist Aki Watanabe will talk to students about how science has made it possible to get to know the world of dinosaurs even though they became extinct more than 65 million years ago.

Computational biologist Tomás Perez-Acle investigates what would happen if robots had eyes and the ability to see us. That's why he'll talk about the fascinating advances in

neuroscience, that allow the eye to be understood as an integral part of the brain, essential to produce new mechanisms that will allow machines to see and understand their environment.

On the other hand, astronomer Antonio Hales will guide an exploration from the birth of the planets and the techniques for detecting them, to how we define life and intelligent civilizations, on a fascinating journey to discover new worlds and ask ourselves if there is life beyond our home: the Milky Way.

Colombian journalist and science broadcaster Angela Posada, author of "In Search of the Squid of the Abyss" (planet), will meet with the school audience to share the details of their book, who talks about this animal that can measure up to fourteen meters, has eight arms, two beaked tentacles of sharp hooks and mighty suction cups.

Thus also, theoretical physicist Andrés Gomberoff will talk about his recently published book "The Music of the Cosmos" (Debate). The author will talk about how science and music relate. This activity will be carried out together with the National Reading Plan and includes the delivery of the book to students who participate.

Among other activities that stand out in the festival's Educational Program, you will find the talk of the renowned Uruguayan neuroscientist Mauro Costa-Mattioli, who will talk to young students about the possibilities of becoming scientists. Costa-Mattioli is a researcher recognized worldwide for his contributions in studies linking neurological diseases to gut microbes.

Walk through science

Like every year at the Port of Ideas Science Festival Antofagasta, in the "Walk through Science" there will be workshops and interactive activities for the whole family, about flora and fauna, environment, astronomy and more, which will be performed by different scientific intuitions, such as the Millennium Core of Planetary Formation who will explain the formation of planets, through the creation of a mock-up that will consider all the processes.

Thus also, the Millennium Institute of Oceanography will address the importance of the deepest areas of our planet, where incredible and diverse organisms live, while the Science initiative, Technology and Society of the U. antofagasta, in the "Sea Zoom" activity will guide a visual and interactive experience around the inhabitants of our oceans. Chile is U Sea. Catholic next to the Academy of Marine Explorers will introduce us to the activities "Not only are there stars in the sky" and "The Giants of the Ocean".

In the field of flora and fauna, Explore Maule next to the U. Talca will hold a didactic workshop to learn about the wide variety of pigments that generate the colors of plants and their importance in photosynthesis. On the other hand, The Lomas Bay Center of the U. St. Thomas will hold a workshop to promote bird knowledge through their sounds. Also, NGO Qarapara will tell us everything we should know about turtles in Chile. The Institute of Ecology and Biodiversity will present its fascinating audiovisual capsules to understand what biodiversity is.

On the other hand, CIGIDEN, guide schoolchildren on a 360-degree virtual journey with computational tsunami simulations, alluvials and volcanic eruptions. Ecoscience Foundation will also hold an interactive workshop on how to care for and improve our respiratory health.

Also, Dr. R. Bravo from the Advanced Center for Chronic Diseases will hold the talk “What do we know about excess weight?”. The U's Interdisciplinary Center for Neuroscience. Valparaiso will develop "See to Believe: illusions that are part of our reality".

The ALMA Observatory will present a fascinating virtual tour of its facilities to more than 5.000 meters high, in addition to his animated series on astronomy #WAWUA. The Millennium Institute of Astrophysics, will present its radial capsules on astronomy and workshops to project holograms .

Red Lama, Latin American network for the environment, will present its entertaining cycle of "Science in Flames" talks. Also the Milenio Core of Mobility and Territories, will tell you how to understand public space, and how we can influence and participate in it. Community Ingenio will hold workshops to teach schoolchildren about optimization, one of the most useful tools in engineering. Planable Foundation also, will present its workshops to build species native to Chile to replicate using the papyroflexia technique.
