-With free screenings a thousand patients of the Araucanía.
-Project carried out in the hospital of Nueva Imperial, It is led by the health service of the Araucanía, the Chilean Association of endoscopy, ACHED and the Centre for advanced chronic diseases, ACCDiS .

-"Through this great operation hope to help prevent and detect early gastric cancer", said Dr. Alejandro Corvalan, ACCDiS researcher.

– Taking tests and further medical and scientific analysis, done in population leading - up to four years- on waiting list.

Successfully culminated the operating doctor in the Hospital of Nueva Imperial, with the completion of free endoscopies 1094 inhabitants of the Region of la Araucanía. The project, with eight weeks, It allowed supplementing the lack of medical care in the area and put an end to the waiting list for these tests, which - in some cases- reached up to four years. Results, that you are still evaluating, You can contribute to the early injury detection and prevention of gastric cancer, the evil cancer that more deaths caused in Chile.

This project is led by the health service of the Araucanía, the Chilean Association of endoscopy, ACHED and the Centre for advanced chronic diseases, ACCDiS .

Public health and prevention

"This is the biggest operating in endoscopic procedures being carried out in our country and in addition", with focus on gastric cancer. Through this, We hope to help the understanding and prevention of this disease which is of high prevalence in the Region of la Araucanía. At the same time, We want to help solve the long lists of expected haay in this area, what constitutes a public health problem", explains Dr. Alejandro Corvalan, ACCDiS researcher.

Dr. Robinson Gonzalez, ACHED President, also welcomed the operational. "We are very pleased with this solidarity work that contributes to a health problem in the Region. We were able to comply with the resolution of endoscopy for more than a thousand people in the community and we hope that when the histological diagnoses are confirmed, We can provide answers and detect any neoplastic lesion early".

The operation counted eighty professionals of health and the use of equipment for taking exams. This work adds to the already performed last year, period in which there were endoscopies to 750 inhabitants of Nueva Imperial. All this is fundamental for the Dr. Corvalán, Since that he is not only considered the taking of examinations and diagnostic tests, but also, a follow-up to the population, It is estimated, It could last two years longer.

"So far we have seen that", in a significant percentage of people, are high-grade precursor lesions of gastric cancer. And those are injuries that this year we will again review to assess the progression. To all this, the analysis added to new population, that he stayed in waiting for endoscopies decision list", says ACCDiS scientist, entity directed by Dr. Sergio Lavandero - devoted to the study of chronic diseases with high mortality in our country, mainly, cancer and cardiovascular diseases-.

Chilean and International Alliance

For Dr. Robinson Gonzalez, the research of early gastric lesions is important in the prognosis of the patient. "This, considering that gastric cancer remains the leading cause of cancer death in our country. Also, It is estimated that 90% of diagnosed cases are advanced, with an overall survival of 10% at 5 years reason which contribute to the diagnosis early is critical".

ACHED President, He points out that experience in this area, not only will allow to help solve a problem of public health, but it also, You can set an example to replicate the operation in other regions of the country, They also need greater coverage in the tests and his early assessment.

The Dra. Constanza Camargo, the United States NIH researcher, National Health Institute, entity that has also collaborated on this initiative , was optimistic the Alliance established with ACCDIS, through which will evaluate new strategies for the early detection of this disease.

"As the NIH we are keen to develop a good diagnosis of neoplastic pre gastric lesions, because if we can identify people with injuries, We can keep track of them to prevent the development of gastric cancer. And the samples will be collected, the idea is to evaluate several markers, some of them are candidates and have already been tested in other populations of high risk. All of this, It will allow us to help many people who are on the waiting list", says the Dra. Camargo, Colombian-born.

In this respect, the researcher points out that both the operating and the scene to evaluate in Chile, is of high importance for the rest of the world, and especially, for other countries in Latin America like Colombia and Peru, where is gastric cancer also of high mortality and where, In addition, There are adequate resources so that the public health system can perform endoscopies at the required time.

"Five years ago we have been working with Dr. Alejandro Corvalán and his team, so that we know your experience in this topic and the work they do. For us it is an honor to participate in this project, but in addition, "we find it interesting to know that the results of these investigations we can extrapolate them to other nations of the continent".

Also, and Japanese and European teachers Alliance, Dr. Gonzalez says that the operation of this year has also considered the training of human resources through training in advanced endoscopy. This, Thanks to the visit of the Drs. Ishida (Showa University), Todagaki (JSES), Moriyama (Kyushu University) and Parra-Blanco (Nottingham University), world experts on early detection of gastric cancer.

"No doubt international contributions achieved in this operation will be a major boost to the search for markers for early detection of this evil cancer", says Dr. Alejandro Corvalan.
