Within the framework of women's month, ACCDIS Advanced Center on Chronic Diseases Welcomes Three New Young Researchers.

Since March, they were incorporated to develop collaborative and multidisciplinary research in the areas of cancer, cardiovascular disease and nanotechnology. "From the Advanced Center for Chronic Diseases (ACCDIS) we are deeply committed to the participation and motivation of these three new researchers to continue their scientific improvement with us and also align ourselves with ANID's commitment to its new gender policy," dr.. Sergio Lavandero, director of ACCDIS and professor at the University of Chile.

Lorena Rosa, Doctor in Sciences, mention Cell biology and Applied Molecular of the University of La Frontera in Temuco, will work with the ACCDiS-MAUCO team under the patronage of Drs.. Catterina Ferreccio and Marcela Hermoso "During my years of doctoral thesis, I went on to study how chronic inflammation promotes the development of gallbladder cancer, which is very common in Chilean and highly lethal women. Since then, I have continued to deepen my interest in understanding how cancer develops and its relationship to inflammation, considering that cancer is the second leading cause of death in chile's population, just being overcome by cardiovascular disease," Lorena explained. Lorena's project is part of the search for circulating inflammatory proteins (cytokines and chemokine) in the blood of MAUCO cohort participants suffering from cancer. Our goal is to look for a profile of inflammatory markers to determine each participant's risk of cancer. This study will provide new information to understand the natural history of cancer and its inflammatory component in the Chilean population.

On the other hand, Alejandra Hernandez biochemistry of the PUC and Doctor of Medical Sciences of the same study house, in collaboration with the University of Groningen in the Netherlands, evaluate the effect of cholecystectomy on the fatty liver and heart. It is also interested in studying whether physical activity can prevent this damage. Alejandra will work in collaboration with dres. Sergio Lavandero and Dr. Catterina Ferreccio.

And to finish Karen Bolaños, University of the Amazon of Colombia and PhD in Molecular Physicochemistry from Andrés Bello University, will work with dres' lines of research. Andrew Quest, Marcelo Kogan and Alejandro Corvalán on cancer in general.
