80% of progress registers socio-environmental study of colonel who performs health

Are thousand people that have been surveyed in eThe first cross-sectional study executed by the Department of Health of the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile (PUC) in the commune of Colonel, What analyzes health situation, prevalence of diseases, in addition, psychosocial determinants, behavioral and biological of the colonels.

This research study, scientifically based, funded by MiHealth Ministry and executed by expert researchers in Population Health and health damage of the PUC, started from June of this 2021, with enumerators who have toured the territory inviting to participate people who have lived for more than 5 years in the city and who are over 18 years old.

"We have reached a thousand people interviewed and 830 who have already delivered blood and urine samples., to analyze the state of health by determining the prevalence of chronic diseases related to environmental deterioration and thus generate scientific evidence, with the aim of improving the health conditions and the environment in the inhabitants of Coronel", said it Seremi (s) Health, Isabel Rojas.

Process

During the first stage of the study there has been an active dialogue with communal authorities and community organizations, from Neighborhood Councils, Council for Environmental and Social Recovery (Cras), Communal Environmental Committee and universities and researchers.

"We are listening to the colonels through this study that is a pioneer in the country, generating scientific evidence and to improve the quality of life of all people, especially those who live in areas that have had a strong environmental deterioration for decades. In the coming weeks we hope to finish the fieldwork and begin to deliver the results confidentially to all the people who participated.", said it PUC researcher, of the Cedeus Center for Sustainable Urban Development, Sandra Cortés.

It is expected to have the statistical conclusions of the prevalence of arsenic and lead metals, according to sex, age and educational level and deliver the official results during the first semester of 2022 to identify risk factors associated with the environment in Coronel.
